Darkside,Steep,Crabbe Peaks in Steep Creek area-February 08-09 2014
We decided with Ben to go into Steep Creek area and stay at the hut by the Darkside Lake.
We left pretty early to try and get there earlier and hopefully get some spots in the hut.
Once we got at the parking lot there wasn't any other cars so we left our tent in the car and started skinning along the logging road.
The road was pretty packed from all those snowmobilers so it was pretty fast travel and we got to the hut in no time.
Once we got at the hut we unpacked all our overnight gear and found 2 spots where we left our sleeping pads and sleeping bags and after some snacks we started our way towards Darkside peak.
There was a lot of ski tracks and snowmobile tracks all over the place which made us to get to the ridge towards Darkside pretty fast following the well packed skin track.
There was few minor ups and down along the ridge towards Darkside but the ridge itself wasn't too bad and we didn't had to take our skis all the way up to the summit.
From the summit we decided to try and follow down one of those mighty looking colouirs and we picked the easiest one which was still pretty tricky for me.
After Ben skied it I go into the chute and once I made my first turn both of skis came off and luckily the snow was soft and they didn't go anywhere.
Once I got my skis back on I tried again and again my skis came off, so at the third time I decided to lock them and ski down with them locked.
Once both of us got at the bottom of the chute we skied back down to the cabin where there was few other groups out there that already started the fire and the cabin was nice and warm.
On the second day we packed everything and once we got back on the logging road we ditched our overnight gear and left towards Steep peak with day packs.
The snow was pretty bad, lots of wind affected areas.
Once we got at the Steep-Crabbe Col we decided to go first for Steep which we were able to skin only about half way up from where we had to leave our skis and boot pack the rest of the ridge which was pretty broken in few spots.
Once we got back to the col we went up towards Crabbe peak which was a bit easier on skis than Steep.
The skiing back down wasn't that great, lots of crust and lost of wind affected areas, but once we got back to the road where we left our overnight gear skiing was pretty fast back down to the car .
