Old Settler

                                              Old Settler Mountain-August 09th 2014

Not too long ago me, Ben and Adrien tried for Old Settler and got turned back because of the rain and the wet bushes on the road and this time the weather was looking perfect and we got Ben's Jeep hoping we will drive further than what we drove last time.

Once we took the turn to our spur we got surprise, there was a huge log blocking the road which meant we will have to hike those km that we drove last time which was a bit over and hour.

Soon we reached to the point where we stopped last time and jumped into the bushy road to Daiphy lake.

The road was in pretty bad shape, in some spots we couldn't tell if we are on the road still or in the bushes in the forest and we were moving pretty slow.

Soon we finally reached the end of the road and now we jumped into some pretty high bushes, we couldn't see what's under our feet and found a dead Black Bear that was hiding in those huge bushes.

Soon we finally reached a terrain that was a little bit more open and we were going somewhere.

Our plan was to follow to Alpine Select route, the Old Settle Traverse and we did it from South to North.

Once we were getting closer to Daiphy Lake we could see how big is that peak and how many options there were for climbing.

Soon we started our way up to the South peak and we went up too early and just after few moves we decided to go back down and follow a gully that looked like it was the way up, where we then found lots and lots of gear left from the other parties up there.

Getting up South Peak wasn't too bad, as is described in the book the central summit is the most difficult to reach and then requires a short rappel on the other side.

For our descend we took the scramble's book route and we were for sure not looking into those bushes.

We were pretty tired by the time we got back to the car and just went straight to bed and didn't even bother setting up an alarm and of course we canceled our plan for the next day.

  1. Incredible photos! There was a plane crash up there in 1941 - did you see it?
