Askom

                                                        Askom Peak March 28-29 2015

After reading some recent reports about the conditions on Askom FSR we decided to go with Dean for Askom Peak on skis as a relaxing overnight trip.

Once we left the city we knew that the weather should be fine but we were expecting some high winds and our hope was to find a shelter or a nice camp spot on the summit.

We drove on Askom FSR up to 1260m elevation where it was a tight after a recent rock fall and we parked before that, and that rock fall was cleared on our way back.

From there we walked for a bit more before reaching the snow from where we were able to finally start skinning and not carrying our skis.

At about 1500m on the logging road we started our ascent up following one of the ribs that goes to the summit of Askom.

Once we got on the ridge we felt that full force of the wind which wasn't too bad still so we weren't too worried about it.

On the summit we couldn't find any shelter spots or any other spot along the ridge so we had to more some small sharp rocks and make a camping spot for our tent and soon went inside the ten where we had full cellphone service.

We started checking the weather and it was showing that the wind will increase up to 70km/h.

After our dinner we went to bed but few hours latter Dean woke me up since our tent collapsed and it was more like a bivy sack now but there was nothing we could do rather than just try to get some sleep so I got my ear plus back and went back to bed.

We woke up in the morning and packed our broken tent fast so we could get out of that wind as fast as possible.

Once we started to move with our packs on Dean had to pretty much crawl for a while or the wind would just push him pretty easy.

Soon we were finally able to put our skis on and ski back down to the car.
